Naoki Hamaguchi, director of the Final Fantasy 7 remake trilogy, is now speaking about the remakes’ legacy and the franchise’s future.

Final Fantasy 7 was a critically acclaimed title when it was released in 1997. Nearly 30 years later, the seventh game in the Final Fantasy series has evolved into a universe of its own, with multiple spin-offs, animated movies, and now a trilogy of games that completely reworks the original title.

Final Fantasy 7’s Remake Trilogy Is Looking Beyond Nostalgia

With the final game in the trilogy, Final Fantasy 7 Revelation, on the horizon, Naoki Hamaguchi has been working overtime not only to ensure the game delivers a proper conclusion but also to make numerous media appearances and interviews to hype the end of this extensive project.

Square Enix Wants Final Fantasy 7 to Keep Evolving

During a recent PAX West panel titled ‘From Reunion to Resolve,’ Hamaguchi explained that the goal of this recent trilogy was to pass the legendary PlayStation 1 game on to the next generation.

“We want to make this a work that creates new fans 20 or even 30 years from now,” he stated. In conjunction with that, promotional material noted that the trilogy wanted to expand the future of Final Fantasy 7 and move it from a classic of the past to its own IP with an ever-evolving future.

So far, it seems they may have succeeded. Final Fantasy 7 will release in April 2027. Learn more about the release date here.
