Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster is now available natively on Nintendo Switch 2, allowing players to return to Spira with improved visuals as the original game celebrates its 25th anniversary.
Square Enix has released the collection as a digital-only package priced at $49.99. It includes both Final Fantasy X and its direct sequel, Final Fantasy X-2, along with the graphical enhancements and additional content introduced in the previous HD Remaster releases.
The Nintendo Switch 2 edition marks the first time the remastered versions have been released natively for Nintendo’s latest console. However, owners of the original Nintendo Switch release will need to purchase the new edition separately, as Square Enix has confirmed that there is no upgrade option between the two versions.
Save files from the Nintendo Switch edition are also incompatible with the Switch 2 release, meaning returning players cannot transfer their existing progress to the new version.
Final Fantasy X celebrates its 25th anniversary
Final Fantasy X originally launched for PlayStation 2 in Japan on July 19, 2001, before arriving in North America and Europe the following year.
The game follows Tidus, a blitzball star whose home city of Zanarkand is attacked by a colossal creature known as Sin. After being transported to the unfamiliar world of Spira, Tidus joins the young summoner Yuna and her guardians on a pilgrimage to defeat Sin.
Final Fantasy X became one of the series’ most recognisable entries thanks to its emotional story, memorable cast and shift away from the traditional Active Time Battle system. It was also the first mainline Final Fantasy game to feature fully voiced characters.
Final Fantasy X-2 takes place two years after the original game and follows Yuna, Rikku and newcomer Paine as they travel across a rapidly changing Spira. Its more upbeat tone and job-based Dressphere combat system represented a significant departure from its predecessor, while continuing several of its unresolved storylines.
To mark the anniversary, Final Fantasy character designer Tetsuya Nomura has created a new Final Fantasy X 25th Anniversary logo.
Over 100 hours of Final Fantasy
Square Enix estimates that the two games provide more than 100 hours of combined gameplay. Players can switch between the original soundtracks and newly arranged music, while characters, environments, monsters and cinematics have all received an HD overhaul.
A new launch trailer has also been released, revisiting several of the collection’s most recognisable locations and moments from Tidus and Yuna’s journey.
Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster is available now on Nintendo Switch 2 for $49.99. Previous versions of the collection are also available across Nintendo Switch, PlayStation, Xbox and PC.
