The director of Final Fantasy 7 Revelation has explained why the game’s physical edition requires a download.
Since Sony has announced it will stop producing physical discs, gamers have been anxiously waiting for the moment when their favorite titles will no longer be available in physical format. Fortunately, the final installment of the Final Fantasy 7 Remake series is set to receive a physical release; however, there is a caveat. Now, the director has clarified why.
Final Fantasy 7 Revelation Director is ‘Very Happy’ They Can Release a Physical Edition
During an interview with IGN, Final Fantasy 7 Revelation director Naoki Hamaguchi was asked about the physical release of the title. Hamaguchi first stated that he is very happy about being able to release a physical edition for the game, “considering how the entire gaming market, or the landscape, is veering towards the disc-less direction.” However, he has acknowledged players’ concerns about physical discs requiring a download and has addressed them
Hamaguchi explained that there was an internal discussion about how they wanted to approach the physical discs for the upcoming title. They had the option to go the FF7 Rebirth route, but the limitation there was that they would have to “make a compromise in terms of the fidelity and the quality of the game.” As a development team, they decided not to compromise game quality; hence, there is a physical disc, but certain sections of the game still need to be downloaded digitally.

Hamaguchi understands that players are not happy about the decision to have a digital download along with a physical disc for Final Fantasy 7 Revelation; however, he is “happy” about being able to provide a physical release and is “quite satisfied with the end results as well.”
